What Do I Need to Start Using a Heat Press Machine?

Are you considering learning how to use a heat press machine? If you are new to this innovative process, you may need some help getting started. Let us guide you through the learning curve, so you can bring your imaginative designs to fruition. Whether you’re using a heat press to start a new business or engage in a new hobby, it will soon become a valuable creative partner!

The Right Supplies

Properly using a heat press requires having a few other supplies as well. You’ll need the machine itself; accessory platens depending on the size of the transfers you’re applying; a plotter if you’re cutting vinyl; the product to be decorated which is called your substrate; artwork, logos, or designs of your choice; and heat transfers

Heat press machines come in various sizes, price points, and styles. To pick one that will best suit your purposes, assess your production needs, experience, and budget. We can help you think through these factors and choose a machine to best serve your interests. A plotter helps you trim your printed transfers or vinyl with precision. The type of vinyl or heat transfer paper you’re using is important depending on your substrate, the style color-copy printer you are using, your designs, and the desired quality and feel for the final product. One way to avoid this part of the process when starting out is to send your designs to a professional heat transfer manufacturer and allow them to custom print transfers that will meet all of your needs. This is something that we do at Insta. We manufacture transfers right here in our Southern California facility!

Once you have an idea of the press and accessories you need to get started, you can begin thinking about all the product options you have. Based on the substrates you initially wanted to print on, you chose a heat press, platens, and transfer type. However, the options you chose would likely be applicable to many different kinds of materials and substrates. Heat press machines can work with a wide array of materials and substrates such as wood, leather, cotton, polyester, nylon, specially coated metals, glass, and even ceramics.

Having a reliable heat press, the right accessories, and knowledge of which types of products you can decorate with these tools will allow you to get even more creative with your designs. There are a plethora of artists out there creating amazing products, so it will be up to you to find your niche.

The Know How

Now that you are ready to begin printing on your heat press, you should also gain a better understanding of how the process works in practice. Before setting up your new heat press, review the instruction manual and follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations for safety and maintenance. Every machine has its own quirks and differentiating features, and it is necessary you understand these for your machine.

To ensure your safety and guarantee your products turn out flawlessly, place the heat press on a solid, level surface. Make sure you are able to access the press from all angles and that it is the correct height for the operator. Always keep your press in a location where children and pets cannot access it. Once the press has a home, turn it on and begin getting the feel for operating it at various temperatures and pressures.

Now you are ready to begin pressing transfers onto your substrate of choice. Adjust the press to the correct temperature and pressure based on what your transfer product specifications tell you. These specifications should also tell you how long to press each transfer for and when to peel the transfer off of the substrate afterwards.

Prepare your substrate before you print on it. This preparation process will vary widely depending on what you are printing on, but for something like a t-shirt, it is as simple as performing a short press without any transfers in place. This will remove excess moisture from the shirt and also smooth out any wrinkles that are present.

Make sure the substrate is positioned how you want it on the lower platen and perform the pre-press. Then place your transfer in the correct location and check to make sure the ink side of the transfer is facing down onto your substrate. Perform your press keeping in mind everything you read in your machine’s instruction manual as well as the settings your transfer product recommends.

Depending on your substrate, your transfer types, and the size/style of your heat press, you may also want to utilize Teflon sheets or covers during your process. These sheets or covers can help protect the lower platen of your press from transfer ink. They are made with the same non-stick material as the Teflon pans people cook on at home.
